The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit PICU at Southampton General Hospital is the regional centre for the South of England and Channel Islands. It is a purpose built unit which has recently expanded to 14 beds caring for critically ill children from newborn to 17 years old. More than 900 children are admitted to this specialist unit each year, many of them directly from Emergency Departments or following major surgery. In addition, there are some retrievals from hospitals across the south of England and Channel Islands. Whilst in the PICU the children receive 24 hour 1:1 care. The retrievals team are also responsible for worldwide Ministry of Defence cases requiring PICU expertise.
Friends of PICU is a registered charity set up in 2006 by nursing staff and parents of children who have been cared for on PICU. The aim of the charity is to support the children and their families, by providing vital equipment and services that are not normally provided by the statutory authorities. The charity maintains the family accommodation on the unit, which has recently undergone a major refurbishment programme. The charity is also funding a psychologist for a period of three years to provide help to children and their families.
